WEBSTER GROVES – Without sports for the 2020 first semester, Webster University Athletics looks back at some events that took place during the week for This Week in Gorlok Athletics History – Jan. 18-24.
Jan. 18, 2020 – Webster women's basketball scored a season high 90 points and held a 57-29 edge on the boards as the Gorloks posted an impressive 90-70 road win in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Eureka College. The win snapped a six game losing streak for Webster on Eureka's home court and extended Webster's season win streak to five consecutive games as they improved to 9-6 overall and 7-1 in the league. The win was the first for Webster at Eureka since earning an 87-83 overtime win on Jan. 5, 2013. In the win, Webster scored 20 or more points in the first three quarters as they led 72-49 heading into the final quarter. Jaysea Morgan led the Gorloks with 17 points, while Addison Beussink and Lauryn Freeman each had 15 points and Naomi Johnson finished with 14 points. The fourth double-digit scorer was Hannah Cottrell, who tallied 11 points in the win. The 57 rebounds by Webster were the most in a game since pulling down a school record 64 boards during the 2018-19 season at Principia. Freeman led the way on the boards with a career nine boards, while Beussink, Cottrell and Morgan each had six boards. Webster collected 25 of those 57 boards on the offensive end. For the game, Webster shot 45 percent from the field and 83 percent at the free throw line, but was just 3-for-12 (25 percent) from the 3-point line. Eureka shot 40 percent from the field, but was held to 17 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 81 percent at the free throw line.

Jan. 19, 2011 – The Webster men's basketball team extended its win streak to eight consecutive wins as they picked up a 57-48 home win at Grant Gymnasium over Westminster (Mo.) College in SLIAC action. The win knocked Westminster from the ranks of the undefeated in league play as they fell to 7-1, while Webster improved to 6-1 in league play. Robby Meeh and Drew Moore each recorded double-doubles in the win as Meeh had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Moore finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Willie Trimble led the Gorloks in scoring with 14 points. The Blue Jays led by as much as 10 points in the second half, before the Gorloks began chipping away at the deficit. The Gorloks forced 18 turnovers and they only committed nine in the win. In addition, Webster shot 23 free throws in the second half and made 17 of them after the Blue Jays led 29-22 at the half. Webster outscored Westminster, 35-19 in the second half.

Jan. 20, 2009 – On Jan. 20, 2009, Webster men's basketball coach
Chris Bunch earned his 100th career victory with the Gorloks as Webster picked up an 89-64 road win over Principia College. In the win against Principia, the Gorloks used a 24-8 run to conclude the first half that gave the Gorloks a 42-31 halftime lead. In fact, when Principia scored its first basket of the second half, more than six minutes had elapsed in the game and the Panthers trailed by 24 points. Ryan Turk paced the Gorloks with a game-high 19 points and added five assists, five rebounds, one block and one steal. In addition to Turk, Steve Hrdlicka and Tyler Tiemann added 13 and 12 points respectively in the win. Webster shot 49 percent from the field and 29 percent from the 3-point line and their defense held Principia to 39 percent shooting and 29 percent shooting from the 3-point line. The Gorloks also held a 49-27 edge on the boards in the victory.

Jan. 21, 2020 – The Webster Baseball team opened the 2020 season ranked No. 2 in the Preseason D3Baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 Poll. In the preseason poll from D3Baseball.com, the Gorloks earned 544 points and three first place votes to sit 11 points behind preseason No. 1 and defending Division III National Champion Chapman, who earned 19 first place votes and 555 points. During the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, the Gorloks would finish with an 8-5 record as they played their final game of the season on March 15 as they picked up a 3-1 win over Keene State in Auburndale, Fla., on the final day of its Spring Break Trip. During the 2019 season, Webster went 37-13 and advanced to the Division III World Series for the fourth time in school history and first time since the 2015 season.

Jan. 22, 2011 – On this date in 2011, Webster women's basketball player Katy Meyer became the fifth Gorlok women's basketball player to join the 1,000 Point Club as she tallied 15 points to help the Gorloks to an 83-71 road win over Greenville in SLIAC action. Along with Meyer's 15 points, who was 4-for-5 from the 3-point line, Airyn Miller added 14 points and Molly Zehner tallied a career-high 12 points and Tori Fenemor had 11 points in the win. Webster led 40-31 and maintained a 10 point lead the remainder of the game. The Gorloks picked up 13 steals and they shot 9-for-18 from the 3-point line in the contest. Webster also outrebounded Greenville, 37-27. Along with shooting 50 percent from the 3-point line, the Gorloks shot 46 percent from the field and 75 percent at the free throw line, while Greenville shot 50 percent from the field and 64 percent (7-for-11) from long distance.

Jan. 23, 2016 – Webster men's basketball used a lay-up from C.J. Moore just before the buzzer to post a 108-106 home win over Greenville in SLIAC action at Grant Gymnasium. Moore's lay-up gave him a team-high 25 points to pace the Gorloks as they snapped a three-game losing skid. The Gorloks were sparked in the second half by the play of Evan Milligan as he scored all 16 of his point after halftime to help lead Webster to the win. Webster led, 54-52 at the half and both teams scored 54 points in the second half. Greenville led by 11 points at 87-76 with 10:15 left in the second half, but the Gorloks used a 17-6 run to tie the game at 93 with 4:35 left. Greenville would push its lead to 103-100, before Milligan hit two free throws to pull Webster within a point at 103-102 with 1:53 left. Moore would then give Webster a 104-103 after hitting two more free throws with 1:05 left. Moore would then collect a steal and get fouled and hit two more free throws to give Webster a 106-103 lead, before Greenville drilled a trey with 30 seconds left to retie the game. In addition to Moore and Milligan, Hunter Ward scored 22 points and Joseph Henry added 12 points in the win. The Gorloks shot 49 percent from the field and made just one three-pointer in the game and held a 53-44 edge on the boards. Greenville shot 42 percent from the field and 41 percent from the 3-point line in the win.

Jan. 24, 2015 – The Webster men's and women's track team opened its indoor season on this date in 2015 ay the Snow Bird Open in Jacksonville, Ill. At the meet, hosted by Illinois College, the men's and women's teams had several outstanding performances, including Haile Wilson's national ranking time in a first place finish in the men's 60-meter dash. At the event, Wilson placed first out of 48 runners and ran a then school record time of 6.99. In addition to Wilson's performance in the 60-meter dash, the Gorlok men got a first place finish in the mile run (4:26.28) from David Lambus, while Mason Stevens became the first pole vaulter in school history as he was seventh with a vault of 3.61 meters and Noah Laster became the first Gorlok to participate in the weight throw as he recorded a toss of 9.66 meters. Meanwhile on the women's side, Lauren McClain placed third out of 29 throwers in the shot put with a toss of 11.11 meters and she also was the school's first-ever participant in the women's weight throw as she placed seventh with a toss of 10.73 meters. Holly Goergen was sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:58.54 and Donalda Desir ran a time of 1:07.24 in the 400-meter dash, which at that time was fourth in school history. For the meet, the Webster men finished eighth out of 14 teams and the women were 11th out of 14 teams.
