ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced the 2022 Men's Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll for the upcoming season. The Gorloks, who have won the last four SLIAC Championships, were picked to finish first in the poll after receiving 109 total points and 10 out of 11 first place votes. Illinois College is picked to finish second after receiving 83 points in the poll and one first place vote.
The Gorloks return three golfers from last years championship team including the reigning NCAA Division III National Champion
Will Hocker. Hocker won two events this past fall including the Rhodes Fall Invitational and the Wittenberg Fall Classic. He currently sits at nine wins for his career which is a Webster record. He also has the lowest scoring average in program history at 72.69.
The team also returns
Justin McCoy and
Mitchell Vetter. McCoy, the reigning SLIAC Champion, had a scoring average of 75.1 in the fall and had two top 20 finishes including a fifth-place finish at the Wittenberg Fall Classic. Vetter, a fifth-year senior, had a scoring average of 73.9 in the fall. He currently sits sixth on the Webster all-time scoring average list as he averages a 76.66 per round. Throughout his career, he has four top five finishes and eight top 10 finishes.
Cody Surma and
Josh Hayes will also look to carry over their momentum from the fall into the spring as Surma recorded a scoring average of 75.30 and Hayes recorded a scoring average of 78.63 in the fall. Surma's best finish in the fall came in the Wittenberg Fall Classic where he finished tied for 12
th after shooting a 153 through two rounds. Hayes finished tied for 16
th at the Millikin Country Club Classic after shooting a 149 through two rounds of golf.
The Gorloks will kick off their spring season on Saturday, February 26th when they travel to Joelton, Tennessee, to compete in the Music City Classic hosted by the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.). The Gorloks will play two rounds on Saturday and one round on Sunday, February 27th at Nashville National Golf Club.
