LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Webster University golf team was back in action this morning when they played the final round of the SLIAC Men's Golf Championships at The Polo Grounds Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The Gorloks, who sat in first place after the first two rounds, were able to win their fifth straight, and 11
th overall, SLIAC Championship after shooting a three-round score of 906 (305-302-299, +42). Lake Forest (Ill.) College finished in second place after shooting a 938 (+74) through 54 holes.
Webster dominated the field as they led the tournament in scoring average on par 3's (3.25), par 4's (4.39), and par 5's (5.05). They also led the field in total birdies (39) while finishing second in total pars (150). They led the field after all three rounds as they held a one-stroke lead after the first round and a nine-stroke lead after two rounds.
Will Hocker led the way for Webster as he won his second career SLIAC Men's Golf Championship and his 14
th career golf tournament. He shot a three-round score of 211 (72-69-70, -5) to beat out the second-place finisher by 12 strokes. He led the field in scoring average on par 3's (3.00), par 4's (4.00), and par 5's (4.58) while leading the field in total pars (37) and finishing tied for first in total birdies (11). He finished the tournament with just six bogeys while birdieing the last hole in all three rounds. He is the fourth straight Gorlok to win the SLIAC Men's Golf Championship while being just the fourth player in SLIAC history to win multiple SLIAC Men's Golf Championships in his career.
Cody Surma and
Justin McCoy also played great in the tournament as they both finished tied for sixth place. Surma finished with a three-round score of 230 (74-76-80, +14) while shooting 26 total pars and nine total birdies. McCoy, the reigning SLIAC Men's Golf Champion, also shot a 230 (79-79-72) while posting 32 pars and seven birdies.
In addition,
Trent Garrett finished tied for 16
th after shooting a 237 (82-78-77, +21) while
Mitchell Vetter finished 33
rd after shooting a 248 (80-82-86, +32). Garrett finished with 28 pars and seven birdies while Vetter tallied 27 pars and five birdies.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, head coach
Brad Smith was recognized as the SLIAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year for the first time in his career and
Will Hocker was named the SLIAC Men's Golfer of the Year for the second time in his career. In addition, Hocker was named First Team All-SLIAC while
Cody Surma and
Justin McCoy were named Second Team All-SLIAC.
With the win today, the Gorloks have qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships. They will play the four-round event at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, from May 10
th to May 13
th.
