WU's Marin Tied For Sixth Overall; Gorloks Place Eighth After Day One At Wabash Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Webster University men's golf team opened tournament play with two rounds at the Wabash College Fall Invitational on Monday at Broadmoor Country Club.  As a team, the Gorloks currently stand in eighth place with a team score of 609. WU's Nico Marin currently ranks in a tie for sixth overall with a two-over par score of 146 after day one.

Round 1:

Leading the way for Webster for the first round was Cole Makgill as he is playing this tournament as an individual. Makgill opened his tournament with a one-under par score of 71 that started with a par on hole 18. On hole two, he made an unfortunate bogey but responded with five consecutive pars. Even through eight holes, Makgill closed out the first nine holes with a birdie on hole eight for a one-under score of 35. 

Makgill opened the final nine holes even-par through the first holes that featured a birdie on the par-five, 12th hole. After an unfortunate bogey on hole15, he closed out the first round with back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17. For the round, he carded 11 pars, four birdies, and three bogeys

Marin recorded the lowest round for the team score with a one-over par score of 73. He started his day on hole four and went back to even-par with a birdie on hole seven. After back-to-back pars, he made a bogey on hole 10. However, he closed out the first nine hole with consecutive pars for a one-over score of 36

Marin opened the final nine holes with three straight pars and then followed up with a birdie on hole 15. Marin closed out the final four holes of his first round at even-par that included two birdies on holes 18 and two. For his round, he tallied nine pars, five bogeys, and four birdies.

The reigning SLIAC Men's Golfer of the Week in Justin McCoy opened his tournament with a two-over par score of 74. He started his day on hole five and was one-over par through the first six holes that included five pars. McCoy closed out his first nine holes with two birdies that included the par-3 hole 11th and hole 13.

McCoy opened the back nine hole with five consecutive pars but closed out the round three-over that included a birdie on hole three for a 39. For the round, McCoy recorded 11 pars, three birdies, three bogey, and a double-bogey. 

Jacob LeBlanc was the next lowest scorer for the Gorloks and opened his tournament-play with a five-over par score of 77. He opened the day on hole six and carded four straight pars which was followed up with a birdie on hole 10. LeBlanc closed the first nine with a plus-three and featured a birdie on hole 13.

The Canada native opened the final nine holes three-over through four holes that included a birdie on hole 18. For the final five holes, he recorded a one-par score that included an eagle on par-four third hole and a birdie on hole five. For the round, he constructed five bogeys, four pars, four birdies, three double-bogeys, and the lone eagle for the Gorloks. 

St. Louis native Connor Luvin, who is playing this tournament as an individual, carded an opening round seven- over par score of 79. Luvin started the day on hole 18 with a birdie but carded a plus-six on the final eight holes for a score of 42. However, he closed out the first round with at even-par that included two birdies on holes nine and 13. For the round, he carded nine pars, three double-bogeys, three bogeys, and three birdies.

Another local product in Josh Hayes opened his tournament-play with an 11-over par score of 83. With the shotgun start, he started on hole seven and carded back-to-back pars and added two more for a first nine hole score of 42. Hayes opened his back nine holes with consecutive pars and added two more to a score of 41. For the round, he recorded nine bogeys, eight pars, and a double-bogey

Trent Garrett rounded out the first round scoring for the Gorloks with a 12-over par score of 84. He started the tournament on hole six and added two pars to the score of 43. On the back nine holes, Garrett constructed four pars and a birdie on the par-five 17th hole to the score of 41.  For the round, he tallied nine bogeys, six pars, two double-bogeys, and a birdie 

As a team, the Gorloks recorded a team score of 307.

Round 2:

Marin captured a tie for sixth overall spot after day one with an one-over par score of 73 in the second round. He opened the afternoon with five consecutive pars and added a birdie on hole 10. Marin closed out the first nine holes with back-to-back pars.

The international student-athlete from Mexico opened the back nine with five straight pars which was followed up with a birdie on the par-five 18th hole. He closed out the day one-over through the final three holes that included two pars. For the round, Marin carded 14 pars, two birdies, a bogey, and a double-bogey.

McCoy tied Marin with a one-over par score of 73 in the second round. McCoy started with back-to-back bogeys but responded with a birdie on the par-five ninth hole. He achieved an under-par first nine holes score of 34 with an eagle on the par-five 12th hole which was followed up a birdie on hole 13. 

On the back nine holes, McCoy started off with consecutive bogeys but followed up with three straight pars. After an unfortunate bogey on hole one, he carded three consecutive pars to capture a score of 73. For the round, McCoy constructed 10 pars, five bogeys, two birdies, and an eagle and ranks in a tie for 11th overall with a tournament score of 147. 

The next lowest round to the team score for the second round was LeBlanc with a five-over par score of 77. He opened the round on hole six with par and got back to even-par with a birdie on hole nine. LeBlanc added three more pars in the front nine holes to the score of 40. 

LeBlanc opened the back nine with consecutive pars and got back to even-par for the nine with a birdie on hole 18. He closed out the day with birdie on hole four and a par on hole five to a score of 37. For the round, he tallied seven pars, six bogeys, three birdies, and a double-bogey. 

Luvin had a very solid second round as an individual as he carded a six-over par score of 78 that started with a par on hole 18. In addition to his front nine holes, he added four more pars to the score of 39. He opened the back nine holes with three straight pars and was later followed up with a birdie on the par-three 15th hole. He closed out the day with back-to-back pars for a score of 39. For the round, he constructed 10 pars, seven bogey, and a birdie. For the two rounds, he created a tournament score of 157. 

Hayes was the next scorer for the Gorloks as he recorded a seven-over par score of 79. He started the second round on hole seven and carded back-to-back pars. He closed out the front nine holes with back-to-back pars to a score of 41. On the back nine holes, Hayes recorded seven pars and two bogeys for a score of 38. For the round, he collected 12 pars, five bogeys, and a double-bogey.  

The New Zealand native in Makgill recorded a nine-over par score of 81 for his second round. He opened the afternoon with a birdie on the par-five 18th hole. After back-to-back pars, he made an unfortunate bogey on hole three but was followed up with a par on hole four. For the remaining four holes on the front nine, he carded a score of six-over for a score of 42. Magkill recorded seven pars and two bogeys on the back nine holes for a score of 37. For the round, he constructed 10 pars, five bogeys, two double-bogey, and a birdie. 

Garrett rounded out the scoring for the day with a 18-over par score of 90. He opened the second round on hole six and added a par and a birdie on the par-five 12th hole to a front nine score of 44. On the back nine holes, Garrett added three pars to the score of 46. For the round, he tallied eight bogeys, four double-bogey, four pars, a triple-bogey, and a birdie. 

As a team, the Gorloks improved five strokes with a score of 302. 

The Gorloks will close out tournament play with the final round tomorrow, October 8 starting at 8:00 AM at Broodmoor Country Club.
