WU’s Merritt Shatters All-Time Heptathlon Record; Three Other Gorloks Make Final Marks Of Indoor Season at NCAA Qualifier

WAVERLY, Iowa. - The Webster University men's track & field program sent four student-athletes to Wartburg College to compete in the two-day NCAA Division III Qualifier on Friday and Saturday. WU's Austin Merritt shattered his own Webster All-time indoor heptathlon by 194 points and set a new all-time record with 4,415 points. 

Friday (March 7): Day 1

The two-day qualifier opened with the heptathlon events as Merritt competed in four events.

In the 60m dash, he recorded a new meet record and was crowned the champion with a time of 7.10 seconds for 847 points. 

In the long jump event, Merritt recorded a mark of 5.74m (18'10.00") for 531 points.

In the shot put, he achieved a third place finish with a mark of 11.06m (36'3.50") for 549 points.

Merritt capped off the day in the high jump where earned a tie for fifth overall with a clearance of 1.77m (5'9.75") for 602 points.

Saturday (March 8): Day 2

WU's Merritt opened the second day of competition with the final three events in the heptathlon. 

In the 60m hurdles, he placed sixth overall with a time of 9.34 seconds for 673 points.

In the pole vault event, he earned a tie for second overall and tied his collegiate-best clearance of 4.00m (13'1.50") for 617 points.

Merritt capped off the heptathlon in the 1000m event and recorded a collegiate-best time of 3:07.13 for 596 points. With the combination of all seven scores, he created the new Webster indoor heptathlon record with 4,415 points. 

Moments later, Dylan Patterson achieved a new personal record in the 60m dash with a time of 6.97 seconds that earned ninth overall. WU's Steven Aubuchon also competed in the event and recorded a time of 7.82 seconds.

In the pole vault event, sophomore Mark Govero earned a sixth overall finish with a clearance of 4.46m (14'7.50"). 

The Gorloks will open the outdoor season on March 28 with a visit to Central Methodist University to compete in the CMU Invite starting at 10:00AM in Fayette, Missouri.
