Webster Explodes For 32-7 Fourth Quarter Run, Downs MUW 85-70; Gorloks Extends SLIAC Win Streak to Five Games

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play by hosting the Owls of Mississippi University for Women Thursday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks shredded a double-digit deficit with a 32-7 fourth quarter run that earned an 85-70 victory over MUW. With the victory, Webster improves to 10-6 overall, 7-1 in SLIAC play, and extends their conference win streak to five games.

Webster opened the game with the early 5-2 lead on a three-pointer by Peyton Dolan and a layup by Kaimyla Nolen. Moments later, MUW responded with a 9-0 run that generated the 5-12 deficit. Following the MUW run, Emily Kerce recorded five consecutive points that included an and-one play that made the score 10-12. 

With four minutes left in the opening quarter, the Owls added consecutive layups that pushed the score to 10-16. The Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 9-5 run to the score of 19-21 that included three three-pointers by Grace Hupp. 

The Owls opened the second quarter with a 10-4 run that made the score 23-31 with baskets by Hupp and Miya Webb. Following that run, the Gorloks chipped back with a 7-3 run that cut the deficit to 30-34 on a layup by Chassity McCammon and five straight points by Akaela Caquelin.

With under four minutes to go in the half, the Owls stretched the deficit to 30-38 with four consecutive points. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks added a 6-0 that cut the deficit to 36-38 on four points by Kerce and a pair of free-throws by Terryn Ford. MUW closed out the first half with a 5-3 run which included a three-pointer by Dolan that generated the 39-43 halftime deficit. 

MUW opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run that pushed the score to 41-54 as Webb added the basket in the paint. Moments later, the Owls stretched the deficit to 46-60. The Gorloks closed out the final three minutes of the quarter with a 9-3 run on three points by Kerce and a basket each from Hupp and Caquelin that cut the deficit to 53-63. 

Webster opened the final quarter with a 12-0 run that started on a layup by Claire Williams. Following that Williams basket, Webb sank a three-pointer when Nolen added a layup. With 5:55 on the clock, Hupp cashed a three-pointer that tied that game at 63 apiece. Williams capped off the run with a pair of free-throws that took 65-63 advantage. The Owls answered with a pair of free-throws that tied the game at 65 apiece.

With the game tied, the Gorloks responded with a 12-0 run on eight points from Webb and four points from Illingworth that generated the 77-65 lead. Webster closed out the game with an 8-5 run that included four points by Webb and Illingworth each that generated the final score. For the entire fourth quarter, Webster recorded nine steals, held MUW to 1-of-8 from the field and five of the Owls points came from the free-throw line. 

For the game, Webb led with 19 points that included three from long range and four free-throws. Hupp recorded a career-high 16 points (4-of-5 from 3-point range) and career-high five assists. Kerce established a season-high 15 points and collected a career-high seven rebounds. Illingworth rounded out double-figure scorers with 10 points.  

As a team, the Gorloks outscored the Owls 42-4 in bench points, 36-22 with points in the paint, and 16-2 in fastbreak points. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a visit to Blackburn College on Wednesday, January 28th starting at 5:30pm in Carlinville, Illinois.
