Webster wins its third straight SLIAC Tournament Title

The Webster Gorloks women’s soccer team won its third straight SLIAC Tournament title on Saturday afternoon at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo. The Gorloks defeated the Maryville Saints, 4-1 in a shootout to claim the crown.

Webster (16-4-1) got a goal in the 74th minute from freshman Christy Capkovic (St. Louis, Mo.) to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime. After neither side scored in either of the two overtime periods, the game went to a shootout. The Gorloks scored on all four of their kicks in the frame while Maryville (13-7-1) made only one of its three attempts. Capkovic sealed the victory with her penalty kick.

The game was pretty evenly matched through the first 45 minutes, but Webster was on the short end of a 2-1 score at the break. The Gorloks outshot the Saints 10-8 in the frame, but Maryville had the edge in shots on goal with six to Webster’s four. In the second stanza the Gorloks controlled the play getting off eight shots compared to two for the Saints.

With the victory Webster secured the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
