Women's Soccer Battled Washington University in NCAA 1st Round

Webster University women's soccer team battled17th-ranked Washington University, losing a first-round NCAA game in overtime to the Bears, 2-1, on November 14.  After tying the game at 1-1, with 27 minutes left in regulation, the Gorloks couldn't muster another scoring chance.  Washington won the game on a goal four minutes into overtime.

The Bears took an early 1-0 lead, four minutes into the first half but the Webster defense stiffened. The Gorloks goalkeeper Shelby Wade (Francis Howell HS, STL) had three saves to keep the deficit at one goal.  Washington kept up the offensive pressure in the second half but it was Webster scoring the lone goal to tie the match.

Junior Kelsey McClure (Hickman HS, MO) sent a long pass Megan Niederschulte (JR, Pattonville HS, STL) headed in for her 22nd goal of the season at the 67:00 mark.  That completed the scoring in regulation.  Washington had a free-kick  four minutes into the overtime period after McClure was shaken up on a play.  A deflection off the kick wound up on the foot of a Bear who shot it home for the victory.

"Webster is a very, very dangerous team with some unbelievable goal scorers," said Washington University head coach Jim Conlon.  "We're just happy to get a win."  Webster coach Luigi Scire remarked, "We showed we were an NCAA tournament team, and we'll work even harder next fall at doing what it takes to get back here and to advance further."

The Gorloks ended another very successful season, finishing with a 15-4-1 record.  Following the game, the Webster players received their participation awards from the NCAA.  Seniors Kristin Garlich and Dana Vahey, both Hazelwood West (STL) grads, Jenna Steiner (Jefferson City HS, MO), and Jesse Schellerup (Francis Howell Central HS, STL) all saw their last game as Gorloks.
