Webster University defeated Principia College (IL) on penalty kicks, 5-4, to win the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament in Elsah, IL, on November 7. Senior Jenna Steiner (Jefferson City HS, MO) scored the game winner in the seventh round of penalty kicks to send the Gorloks to the NCAA III tournament.
Christy Capkovic (JR, Mehlville HS, STL) scored her NCAA-leading 33rd goal of the season at 69 minutes and 30 seconds to tie the game 1-1. With the score tied at the end of regulation, the game headed to two 10-minute sudden death overtime periods.
A shot by Capkovic on a breakaway was saved by the Principia goalie, and Webster GK Shelby Wade (FR, Francis Howell HS, STL) came up with several saves also in OT as the game went to PKs.
The penalty kick goals were tied 3-3, with the first five shooters completed, sending the game into sudden death PKs. After both sixth round shooters scored, Principia's seventh shot was deflected wide by Wade. Steiner, who had been shaken up on a foul earlier in the game, buried her attempt and the Gorloks were victors. Steiner's efforts landed her the Most Valuable Player Award for the tournament.
In addition to Steiner, Capkovic, Wade, and Jesse Schellerup (SR, Francis Howell Central HS, STL) were named to the SLIAC All-Tournament team.
Webster will enter the NCAAs with a 16-3 overall record. The trip to the NCAA Tournament will be the eighth in the 11-year history of the women's soccer program.
