Gorlok Keeper Vying for Spot on Costa Rican U-20 National Team

Maria Arias Hopes to Play in U-20 World Cup

Webster University women's soccer goalkeeper, Maria Arias, is currently with the Costa Rica U-20 National Team, hoping to compete in the 2010 U-20 World Cup.  Arias, a sophomore from San Jose, Costa Rica, was 2-0 in eight games, with two shutouts and a 1.14 goals against average, for her freshman season at Webster.

Arias was invited to the Costa Rica U-20 camp and has been training with them since early May.  She is one of four goalkeepers in camp and is working for a roster spot for the Cup games.  Her freshman experience at Webster should make her no stranger to competition for time in goal as the Gorloks had three able keepers in Arias, fellow freshman Shelby Wade, and sophomore Brittany Senator.  Wade was  a SLIAC First Team, All-Conference selection.

The Costa Ricans first round match is vs. host country Germany on July 13 in Bochum.  They will also face France and Colombia in their group.  The final is on August 1 in Bielefeld, Germany.  Hopefully, Arias will be taking her place besides her fellow countrywomen as they compete on the World stage.
