Webster University women's soccer team, dealing with a rash of injuries, battled from behind to defeat Carroll University, 2-1 in 2 OT, at AB Soccer Park on September 25. Megan Niederschulte (SR, Pattonville HS, STL) was the offensive heroine, scoring the tying goal with two minutes left in regulation, then scoring the game winner at 103:35 of the second OT.
Niederschulte's game winner came off a through ball by Morgan Milfeld (JR, DeSoto HS, MO) that left Niederschulte one on one with the goalie. It was her team-leading sixth goal and the 50th of her career, moving her into fourth place on Webster's all-time goals list.
Webster was without Christy Capkovic (SR. Mehlville HS, STL) and Caroline Schmidt (SO, Oakville HS, STL), who were nursing injuries, and Lindsey Owens (JR, St. Dominic HS, STL) would join their ranks in the second half. Amy Raimondo (FR, Mehlville HS, STL) had already been declared out for the season due to an injury in an earlier contest.
Carroll was the 2009 Midwest Conference champion and made an appearance in the NCAA III Tournament regional at Washington University, along with Webster. The Pioneers were 4-2 entering the contest. The Gorloks fell behind at the 14:00 mark and trailed 1-0 at the half. Physical play intensified in the second half as 15 fouls were called. Goalie Shelby Wade (SO, Francis Howell HS, STL) faced 19 shots and had nine saves while picking up her second win.
Play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference begins on September 28 as the Gorloks travel to Greenville College (IL). The team returns home on October 1 to take on Spalding University (KY).
