The Webster University women's soccer team battled the elements and Greenville College (IL), but saw its 2011 season come to an end with a 2-1 loss to the Panthers in the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. Game conditions were poor at the outset with high winds and a steady rain, and deteriorated as the game wore on. Webster took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but two unanswered Greenville goals sealed the contest.
The Gorlok defense, a strong suit for the team all season, had trouble clearing balls two different times after Webster had taken their lead, with the Panthers converting both for their goals. Webster took the lead at the 59:17 mark when Lindsey Owens (SR, St. Dominic's HS) scored off a backward pass from the end line by Amanda Zeier (SR, McCluer HS). The goal was Owens fourth of the season and Zeier picked up her sixth assist.
Greenville's victory was just its second in 20 tries against Webster, dating back to 1999. The Panthers only other victory over the Gorloks occured in 2008.
The game was marred by an injury to standout midfielder Katie Aubuchon (SO, Affton HS) four minutes into the second half. Aubuchon appeared to be head-butted away from the ball, in front of the Gorlok bench, and suffered facial injuries that prevented her from returning. The Greenville player committing the infraction received a yellow card, leading to protests by coach Luigi Scire who felt the offense merited a red card.
Webster concluded another successful season at 12-6-1, finishing second in the SLIAC at 7-1. The team transitioned from the loss of the program's all-time top two scorers to graduation in 2010, relying heavily on freshmen who gained valuable experience this season, who jelled with the returners.
Seven Gorloks donned the Webster uniform for a final time. Seniors Candice Evans (DeSoto HS, MO), Jordan Geller (O'Fallon HS, IL), Morgan Milfeld (DeSoto HS, MO), Owens, Brittany Senator (Quincy HS, IL), Izzy Sherfy (Pattonville HS), and Zeier completed their Webster soccer careers.
