Women's Soccer Advances to SLIAC Championship

Box Score The Webster University women's soccer team advanced to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game, with a 2-1 semi-final win over Westminster College, on November 5, at the Soccer Park.  Lauren Pratt (JR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) scored the game winning goal and assisted on another.  Webster will face Principia College (IL) for the championship.

After a scoreless first half, which favored Webster statistically but did not translate into any goals, the Gorloks took a 1-0 lead on Kristin Montgomery's (SR, St. Louis, MO/Duchesne HS) ninth goal of the season.  Pratt had corraled a deflected shot and crossed it to Montgomery who buried it for her 40th career goal, at the 56:05 mark.

The Blue Jays tied the game at 75:19, breaking a 480 minute scoreless streak in goal by Webster keeper Jessica Davis (SR, Belleville, IL/Belleville West HS).  But Ashley Mess (JR, St. Louis, MO/Northwest HS) sent a ball across midfield that Pratt raced by the Westminster defenders to control.  Pratt calmly sent the ball top shelf for her sixth goal of the year at the 81:14 mark.  The Webster defense made the goal stand up as the Gorloks won, 2-1.

Davis picked up the win in the nets and is now 8-2-2 on the season.  Davis is 43-13-3 for her career at Webster, with the 43 wins the Gorloks' all-time high.  Webster went 9-0 in the SLIAC during the regular season and counting the semi-final win, has allowed only two goals to SLIAC competition.  Both goals were scored by the Blue Jays, who the Gorloks beat 3-1 on October 22 in Fulton, MO.

Webster entered the game as the #1 seed, and are 13-4-3 overall with the win.  Westminster entered as the #4 seed and finishes the year at 8-7-2 overall.  The appearance was the Blue Jays first in the SLIAC Tournament since 2006.  Webster outshot Westminster, 19-5, and had 12 corner kicks to the Blue Jays two.

Principia, the #3 seed, defeated Fontbonne University, 1-0, in the other semi-final earlier in the day to advance to the championship.  This will be Webster and Principia's sixth meeting in the championship game, with Webster holding a 3-2 edge, most recently beating the Panthers, 4-1, in 2013.  Two of the Gorloks wins over the Panthers have come on penalty kicks.

Webster is ranked 10th in the Central Region in the NSCAA's most recent ranking.  The Gorloks will play Principia at 7:00 p.m. on November 7 at the Soccer Park.  The winner will automatically advance to the NCAA III women's soccer Championships.
