Women's Soccer Suffers First SLIAC Loss At Spalding

Box Score In a wild finish, the Webster University women's soccer team saw its 25-game win streak in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference go by the boards in a 2-1 overtime loss at Spalding University in Louisville, KY, on October 21.   The Golden Eagles tied the game with only two minutes left in regulation, just missed ending the game seconds into overtime as Webster goalie Alisa Coralic made a stop on a penalty kick, but scored three minutes later for the win.

The Gorloks loss opens up the race for first in the SLIAC as they fall to 6-1, with Spalding a half game out at 5-1-1, and Greenville and Westminster Colleges holding down 5-1 records.  Webster's SLIAC win streak had dated back to the 2012 season.  The loss was also Webster's first to Spalding, as the Gorloks had come into the contest 6-0 vs. the Golden Eagles.

Both teams had a defensive battle in the first half that saw a 0-0 draw at the break.  The Gorloks outshot the Golden Eagles, 3-1, with two shots on goal for the period.

Neither had scored in the second half, with Webster outshooting Spalding 4-2 with three shots on goal, until Lauren Pratt (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) broke through at 69:02.  Carolyn Ries (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh HS) got the assist as she set up Pratt for her fifth goal on the season.  That goal stood up until the Golden Eagles tied the game with just two minutes remaining in regulation.

Webster was called for a foul in its own box just seconds into the overtime period, but Coralic (FR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville HS) made the stop to temporarily save the game.  The Gorloks had a corner kick at 93:15 that they couldn't convert on and the Golden Eagles took the ball downfield and scored the game-winner 30 seconds later.

Coralic got the start and went the distance in goal for Webster, taking her first loss as she falls to 7-1.  Coralic has a SLIAC-leading 1.05 goals against average for the year in her freshman campaign.

Webster, ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA Central Region poll, is 10-5 overall.  Spalding is 8-4-2 overall.  The Gorloks had won five in a row and eight out of their previous nine.

The Gorloks are back home on October 24 as they host Iowa Wesleyan University at the Soccer Park.
