This Week in Gorlok Athletics History: October 19-25

WEBSTER GROVES – Without sports for the 2020 first semester, Webster University Athletics looks back at some events that took place during the week for This Week in Gorlok Athletics History - Oct. 19-25.
 
Oct. 19, 2018 – The Gorlok volleyball team extended its school record streak of consecutive sets won to 33 following a three-set win at Blackburn (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) on Oct. 25, 2018. Along with extending its school consecutive set streak to 33, the win also extended the Gorloks overall win streak to 11 straight matches as they improved to 15-7 overall and 13-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Against the Beavers, the Gorloks got a balanced offensive attack as five players recorded five or more kills and the Gorloks outhit the Beavers, .165 to .088. Tori Grassi paced the Gorloks with 10 kills, while Samantha Budrovich and Samantha Kruse each had seven kills and combined for nine digs. Sarah Jacobs added six kills and hit .294 and Taylor Kissel had five kills and four blocks in the win. Defensively, Webster had 72 digs, including Kristen Farrah recording 23 digs for her fourth straight match of tallying 20 or more digs, while Jenna Rodriguez posted a double-double of 15 digs and 10 assists. Oct. 20, 2012 – Webster sophomore men's cross country runner Jason Hickson set a new school record in the 8K at the St. Louis Fall Classic as he ran the course at Forest Park in a time of 26:41. Hickson's time bettered the previous school record mark by 24 seconds. At the event, which was hosted by St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Hickson placed ninth among the college runners competing and 20th overall. Hickson broke the 8K record of 27:05 that was set earlier in the 2012 season by Dan Henkey. Recap
 
Oct. 21, 2009 – Webster women's soccer junior Christy Capkovic set three new school records (one season and two career) during the Gorloks' 9-0 SLIAC win at Spalding. Against the Golden Eagles, Capkovic, who was inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 and the SLIAC Hall of Fame in 2018, scored four goals in the match, including tallying a hat trick in the first half and that fourth goal in the second half set a new single season mark for goals with 25. In addition to setting a new single season school for goals with 24, she also set new school career marks for goals with 62 and career points with 158 after adding two assists to go with her four goals. In addition to Capkovic's four goals, Megan Niederschulte added a goal to push her career total of 52 goals and 139 points. Capkovic bettered the single season record of 24 goals set by Kelsey McClure in 2007, while the 62 goals bettered the old mark of 58 set by Niki Martinez from 2000-02 and the 158 points was two better than Martinez's previous record of 156. The victory improved Webster's overall record to 10-3 and its league record to 3-1. Box Score | Recap
 
Oct. 22, 2014 – A goal from Dzani Delic in the 68th minute helped lead the men's soccer team to a 1-0 SLIAC win at Westminster College. The win helped the Gorloks remain undefeated in league play as they improved to 5-0-1 in SLIAC action. Against the Blue Jays, Delic's goal came off a header from Mike Wells. The shutout in goal went to Ian McReynolds as he recorded his third shutout of the season as he did not record any saves in the match as Webster outshot Westminster, 12-4, including a 5-0 edge in shots on goal. Oct. 23, 2019 – The Webster men's soccer team scored a season high 10 goals en route to posting a 10-0 win at Blackburn College. The 10 goals were the most scored by the Gorloks in a match since tallying 11 goals in an 11-0 win on Oct. 4, 2014 at Eureka College. Against the Beavers, Webster held a 26-2 edge in shots and a 15-1 edge in shots on goal. Aamahn Murvin, Justin Kohler and Logan Takizawa each scored two goals in the match, while Tanner Haugen and Colby Kapp each had two assists in the win. Along with scoring 10 goals, the Gorloks also had an assist on each of its goals and the 10 assists were tied for fourth most in a match in school history. Matt Amick and Eli Smith shared the shutout in net for the Gorloks as Amick played the first half and did not face any shots, while Smith faced one shot and made a save in the win. Oct. 24, 2018 – Webster's volleyball team closed out the SLIAC portion of its regular season schedule with a three-set sweep in Louisville, Ky., against Spalding (25-23, 25-17, 25-10) to extend its win streak to 14 consecutive matches to earn a share of the regular season SLIAC title. In the win over Spalding, Torie Grassi led the way with 13 kills and hit .333 as Webster finished the match hitting .190 and recorded 42 kills. Along with Grassi's 13 kills, Samantha Budrovich added 10 kills and hit .243, while Samantha Kruse had eight kills, 14 digs and hit .500. Defensively, the Gorloks held Spalding to an .039 attack percentage, but were outdug, 57-52. Kristen Farrah led Webster with 14 digs to extend her double-digit dig streak to 30 straight matches. Oct. 25. 2014 – The men's soccer team remained undefeated in SLIAC play following its 3-0 shutout home win on Senior Day over Blackburn College. With the win, Webster improved to 8-8-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the league and took over first place in the league standings. The shutout was the fourth straight for the Gorloks as Brian Woodward picked up his 27th career win and 15th career solo shutout as he recorded three saves in the win. After neither team was able to score in the first half, the Gorloks scored three goals after halftime thanks to goals from Brendan Shields, Jeff Wallner and Russ Giglio. In the win, Webster outshot Blackburn, 31-7. Box Score | Recap
