WEBSTER GROVES – In today's 12th and final Tuesday Top 5, which delves into some of the top five statistical lists in the history of Webster University Athletics, we look at the Top 5 totals for career strikeouts in the history of the Webster softball program. These statistical lists are based on actual rankings by the statistic or category listed with information on each of those student-athletes in the Top 5 rankings.
The career strikeout record for softball was set from 2011-13 by Trisha Thompson as she recorded 325 strikeouts and those 325 strikeouts are sixth most in the history of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In the 22-year history of the Gorlok softball program, only six players have recorded 200 or more career strikeouts and two of those six players have had 300 or more career strikeouts. This group of five career strikeout leaders combined to record 1,424 strikeouts.
Listed below are the Top 5 all-time leaders in career strikeouts for Webster University Softball.
Trisha Thompson (2011-13) – 325 Strikeouts … During her three career as a Gorlok from 2011-13, Thompson recorded 325 strikeouts in 62 career appearances. Along with holding the school's career mark for strikeouts, Thompson also holds the school's single season mark for strikeouts as she recorded 175 strikeouts in 2013 and those 175 strikeouts in 2013 is fifth in a single season in SLIAC history. She also has the top two strikeout marks in a single game in school history as she had 18 strikeouts against Grinnell in 2013 and 14 strikeouts at Westminster (Mo.) in 2013. The 18 strikeouts against Grinnell is also a single game SLIAC record. In her time at Webster, she recorded 60 or more strikeouts in all three seasons as she had 64 in 2011 and 86 in 2012. Thompson, who was named the Webster Athletics 2010's Softball Pitcher of the Decade, was a three-time All-SLIAC selection and was also named to the SLIAC All-Tournament Team in 2011. In addition to holding the school record for career strikeouts, she tallied a school record 7.05 strikeouts per 7 innings and is second on the school's all-time chart in shutouts (14) and is tied for fourth in career saves (3). Additionally, her 62 appearances are fifth-most in school history, while her 37 complete games and 322.2 innings pitched are both fifth in school history and her 25 wins are tied for seventh-most in school history. Her 3.06 career ERA is 14th on the school's all-time chart.
Gail Vogt (2005-07) – 324 Strikeouts … In her three year career as a Gorlok, Vogt, who lettered at Webster from 2005-07, recorded 324 career strikeouts, which is second on the school's career chart. The 324 strikeouts are seventh on the SLIAC all-time chart. While sitting second on the school's career chart in strikeouts, Vogt, who was inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014, is fourth and fifth in single season strikeouts as she had 119 strikeouts in 2007 and 106 strikeouts in 2006. Along with recording 106 and 119 strikeouts in 2006 and 2007 respectively, she also had 99 strikeouts in her first season as a Gorlok in 2005. She also ranks first in career pitching appearances (89), career innings pitched (432.2) and is third in career wins with 46 and her 2.56 career ERA is 12th in school history. Vogt was a three-time All-SLIAC performer, including earning first team honors in 2007. Additionally, she was named the SLIAC Player of the Year in 2007.
Crystal Wilson (2001-02) – 290 Strikeouts … Wilson, who was inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020, sits third on the school's all-time strikeout list with 290 strikeouts. Along with being third on the school's career chart for strikeouts, Wilson is also second and third on the school's single-season strikeout chart as she recorded 169 strikeouts in 2002 and 121 strikeouts in 2001. She is one two Gorlok softball pitchers in school history to record 100 or more strikeouts in a season twice. As a Gorlok, Wilson, who transferred to Webster from Lincoln (Ill.) College, was a two-time First-Team All-SLIAC selection and was also a two-time Team MVP and team captain. She currently holds school career records for wins (52), starts (64), complete games (51), shutouts (15) and is second in career appearances (72) and career innings pitched (406) and fourth in career ERA (1.47). In her time with the Gorloks, she compiled a 52-13 record as a pitcher and tossed 51 complete games and also added two saves for a Gorlok softball program that posted a combined record of 69-16 overall and a 23-1 mark in SLIAC play over those two seasons. Along with the career records she holds, Wilson also holds single season school marks for wins (28 in 2002), starts (35 in 2002), complete games (30 in 2002), innings pitched (217 in 2002) and her 36 appearances in both 2001 and 2002 are tied for the most in a season in the program's history.
Jeanne Zes (1998-00) – 253 Strikeouts … Zes was a three-year letterwinner at Webster from 1998-00 and in those three years, she recorded 253 career strikeouts, which is fourth on the school's all-time chart. Zes, who was inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012 and the SLIAC Hall of Fame in 2013, recorded 80 or more strikeouts in all three seasons as she had a high of 88 strikeouts in 1999 and also recorded 85 strikeouts in 2000 and 80 strikeouts in 1998. In her career, she was a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including earning first team honors in 1998 and 2000 and she was named the SLIAC Player of the Year in 1998. Along with being fourth on the school's all-time strikeout chart, Zes also holds school career records for saves (4) and is second in career wins (48), career starts (61), career complete games (48) and is third in career ERA (1.37), career shutouts (13), career innings pitched (369.0) and fourth in career appearances (66). She played in three straight NCAA Tournaments for the Gorloks.
Megan Sperry (2008-10) – 232 Strikeouts … Another three-year letterwinner for the Gorloks, Sperry recorded 232 strikeouts from 2008-10 and those 232 strikeouts are fifth on the school's career chart. In her career, she recorded 80 or more strikeouts two times as she had 89 strikeouts in 2009 and 86 strikeouts in 2008. Along with being fifth on the school's career chart in career strikeouts, she is third and fourth on the school's single game strikeout chart as she had 13 strikeouts against Eureka in 2008 and had 12 strikeouts against MacMurray in 2010. She was a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including earning first team honors in both 2008 and 2010. She currently sits fourth in career wins (36), fourth in career complete games (38), fourth in career innings pitched (337.2) and tied for sixth in career shutouts (8).
One other Gorlok has recorded 200 or more career strikeouts as Ashley Meagher (2010-12) tallied 202 strikeouts as a Gorlok from 201-12. In her time as a Gorlok, Meagher, who was named to the SLIAC 2010-19 All-Decade Softball Team, was a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including earning first team honors in 2011 and 2012. She was also named the SLIAC Pitcher of the Year in 2011and earned a spot on the SLIAC All-Tournament Team in 2010.
