WEBSTER GROVES – In today's 10th Tuesday Top 5, which delves into some of the top five statistical lists in the history of Webster University Athletics, we look at the Top 5 totals for career scoring in the history of the Webster men's basketball program. These statistical lists are based on actual rankings by the statistic or category listed with information on each of those student-athletes in the Top 5 rankings.
The career scoring mark for men's basketball is one of the oldest records still standing as the career scoring mark of 1,606 points was set by Dan Thoman from 1987-91. In the 34 year history of the Gorlok men's basketball program, only 13 players have scored over 1,000 career points and eight of those 13 players have scored 1,200 or more career points. This group of the top five scorers in men's basketball history combined to score 6,763 points. Two of the top five scorers played before 2001.
Listed below are the Top 5 all-time leaders in career scoring for Webster University men's basketball.
Dan Thoman (1987-91) – 1,606 Points … During his four year career as a Gorlok from 1987-91, Thoman scored a total of 1,606 points in 100 games and averaged 16.1 points per game in his career. He is the school's all-time leading scorer and also leads the school in career field goals made (640), career field goals attempted (1,341) and career rebounds (738) and is second in career steals (170). In his career, he scored over 400 points in three of his seasons, including a high of 477 points as a junior in 1989-90. Those 477 points are currently ninth on the school's single season chart. Along with scoring 477 points in 1989-90, Thoman, who was inducted into Webster's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011, also tallied 447 points in 1990-91 and 446 points in 1988-89. As a senior in 1990-91, Thoman, who was a graduate of Winfield (Mo.) High School, was named a First-Team All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, which was the only year he was eligible as the SLIAC began in 1990-91. He is 263 points in front of the program's No. 2 scorer in school history.
Ahmad Smith (2011-15) – 1,343 Points … Smith sits second on the school's all-time scoring chart as he scored 1,343 points from 2011-15. Along with being second on the school's career scoring chart, Smith is also second in school history in field goals made (500) and minutes (2,718) and is third in field goals attempted (1,058). He scored over 330 points in three of his four seasons as a Gorlok, including tallying a high of 459 points as a junior in 2013-14. He also scored 365 points in 2012-13 and 333 points in 2014-15. Smith was named a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including earning first team honors in both 2013-14 and 2014-15. In his career, he averaged 13.4 points per game and averaged over 14 points per game over his final three seasons, including averaging 16.4 points per game in 2013-14.
Paul Zellmer (1997-00) – 1,284 Points … During his three-year career as a Gorlok from 1997-00, Zellmer scored 1,284 points, which is third on the school's single season chart. In addition to being third in career scoring, Zellmer, who was inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018, holds the school's all-time record for 3-point field goals made (247), 3-point field goals attempted (683), 3-point field goal percentage (36.2 percent) and steals average (2.2). Additionally, he is second in career field goals attempted (1,123) and is third in career steals (168). Zellmer, who is from Janesville, Wis., scored over 400 points in all three of his seasons, including a high of 443 points in 1998-99. He also scored 437 points in 1997-98 and 404 points in 1999-00. In his time as a Gorlok, Zellmer was a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including being a two-time First-Team All-SLIAC selection in both 1997-98 and 1999-00. He was a member of Webster's first-ever men's basketball team to win an SLIAC title and advance to the Division III Tournament in 2000.
Darin Hoggatt (2004-08) – 1,275 Points … Hoggatt, who played at Webster from 2004-08, is fourth in school history in scoring as he tallied 1,275 points in 99 career games. While he is fourth in career scoring, Hoggatt, who is a native of Fordland, Mo., holds the school's all-time record for free throws made (327) and free throws attempted (450) and is second in career field goal percentage (53.2 percent) and third in career field goals made (474). In his time as a Gorlok, Hoggatt scored over 330 points two times, including a high of 492 points as a junior in 2006-07. The 492 points are sixth on the school's single season charts. In addition to the 492 points, he also scored 332 points in 2005-06 and had 282 points as a senior in 2007-08. Hoggatt was a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including earning first team honors in 2005-06 and 2006-07. He was a member of Webster's 2007-08 squad that was the first to go 16-0 in the league and the first to win 20 games in a season. In fact, the Gorloks won the SLIAC in three of the four years Hoggatt played at Webster.
Josh Johnson (2016-20) – 1,255 Points … The most recent addition to the school's Top 5 career scoring chart is Johnson, who tallied 1,255 points from 2016-20 and is fifth on the school's all-time scoring list. Along with being fifth on the school's career scoring chart, Johnson is the program's all-time leader in career free throw percentage (86.6 percent) and is third in career free throws made (279) and is fourth in career 3-point field goals made (166). Johnson, who is a native of St. Louis, Mo., and prepped at Clayton High School and is now serving as an assistant coach with the Gorloks, scored over 400 points over his last two seasons as he tallied 483 points as a senior in 2019-20 and 450 points in 2018-19. The 483 points last season by Johnson is seventh on the school's single season chart, while the 18.6 scoring average in 2019-20 is eighth on the school's single season chart. Johnson is one of 13 players in school history to score 35 or more points in a game as he scored 35 points during the 2019-20 season at Principia College. Johnson was a two-time First-Team All-SLIAC selection in both 2018-19 and 2019-20 and also was named the SLIAC Player of the Year in 2019-20. He was also named a Second-Team NABC All-District selection in 2019-20.
Three other Gorloks have scored over 1,200 career points in men's basketball as Jeff Reis (1999-01) scored 1,236 points in just two years, while John Cooksey (1991-94) and Eric Stack (1987-91) scored 1,212 and 1,211 points respectively in their Webster careers. All three of those players have been inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame as Reis, who scored a school record 697 points as a senior in 2000-01 and holds both the SLIAC and Webster single game scoring record as he scored 53 points against Maryville (Mo.) in 2001, was inducted in 2010, while Cooksey, who scored 509 points in 1992-93 was inducted in 2016 and Stack was enshrined in 2011. In addition, Reis was also enshrined into the SLIAC Hall of Fame in 2007.
